Indonesia is now allowing the return of AI chatbot Grok to the country provided that it adheres to the strict conditions set by the government.

This comes after its parent company, X, committed to better compliance to local rules and regulations.

Grok to Return to Indonesia

According to a report by ANTARA News, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has already started the process that will allow for Grok's conditional return to Indonesia.

"This conditional normalization has been initiated following X Corp’s written statement outlining concrete plans to improve its services and prevent misuse," Komdigi Director General of Digital Space Monitoring Alexander Sabar said in a statement.

"We consider this a basis for evaluation, not the end of supervision,” he emphasized.

EU's Investigation

Last month, Grok was temporarily banned in Indonesia due to concerns over non-consensual deepfake pornographic images that were made using the AI chatbot.

While the conditional return to Indonesia is undoubtedly good news for X, it cannot be said that the company is getting good news elsewhere.

Last week, it has been reported that the European Union (EU) has launched an investigation both on Grok and X.

"The new investigation will assess whether the company properly assessed and mitigated risks associated with the deployment of Grok's functionalities into X in the EU," the EU said in a statement announcing the investigation.

"This includes risks related to the dissemination of illegal content in the EU, such as manipulated sexually explicit images, including content that may amount to child sexual abuse material," it added.
