Indonesia has appointed OpenAI, the company behind artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, as a value-added tax (VAT) collector for digital services in the country.
What this means is that OpenAI must now collect and remit VAT on services sold to Indonesian users.

OpenAI Appointed as VAT Collector
Aside from OpenAI, two other companies were likewise appointed by the Finance Ministry’s Directorate General of Taxes, according to a report by ANTARA News.
These companies are the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation and Bespin Global.
Rosmauli, the tax office's Director of Counseling, Services, and Public Relations, released a statement to address the appointments made.
He said, "The appointment of VAT collectors in the artificial intelligence sector shows that the digital economy is increasingly delivering tangible benefits to society, particularly in supporting state revenue."
On the other hand, the VAT collector status of Amazon Services Europe S.a.r.l. has been revoked by the government.
OpenAI Searches for Head of Preparedness
In other related news, OpenAI made headlines when it announced that it is looking for someone to fill the role of Head of Preparedness.
The role, according to a report by Business Insider, requires balancing the demands of OpenAI Sam Altman and the safety concerns and issues that come with AI.
This job is definitely easier and said than done, but whoever is hired will be properly compensated. The salary of whoever the Head of Preparedness will be is US$550,000 (approximately Rp9.23 billion) a year, plus equity.
