In an effort to address a budget deficit, Indonesia is reportedly eyeing additional tax payments for wealthy individuals.
It has likewise been reported that businesses run by local tycoons have already been informed by the government about paying additional dues.

Some Businesses Push Back on Additional Tax Payments
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, these businesses were asked to pay more than Rp83.825 billion or US$5 million.
The report notes that there have been instances of businesses pushing back against this. During said instances, the government instead proposed a payment of 30% of the requested amount.
It has been alleged that it cannot be determined how the government came up with the figures they were trying to charge companies.
White-Collar Professionals Also Approached
White-collar professionals have also been targeted by this recent effort to collect more tax payments. According to the South China Morning Post, the tax office has been auditing returns in order to spot any errors.
There have also been high-paying taxpayers who have been summoned in order to explain and voluntarily correct their tax returns.
The Finance Ministry's Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto, has clarified that these summons are "essentially a routine task of the tax office."
Indonesia's Fiscal Position Remains Stable
It has been reported that the fiscal position of Indonesia continues to be stable despite the budget deficit the government is try to address.
According to a previous Business Times Indonesia report, the country's state budget deficit reached Rp560.3 trillion (approximately US$33.4 billion) by November 2025. This reproesents 2.35% of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP).
This deficit is a 39% increase from the same period in 2024, which was Rp402 trillion or 1.83% of GDP.
Despite this, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has already assured that the country's " fiscal position continues to demonstrate resilience amid various external challenges."
