Indonesia's Foreign Ministry will not evacuate Indonesian citizens from Iran for now despite the ongoing deadly protest in the Middle Eastern country.

However, the government has assured that it will prepare a contingency plan should the protests escalate and the need to evacuate arises.

Indonesia Will Not Evacuate Citizens in Iran for Now

According to a report by Jakarta Globe, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement that "Based on our assessment as well as the situation on the ground as of Jan. 12, we don’t see the need for evacuation."

The report notes that, as of June 2025, there are 386 Indonesian who reside in Iran. Most of the Indonesians in the country are students.

Iran's Deadly Protests

The ongoing protests in Iran is being described as the deadliest one yeat. The BBC reports that, as of press time, 650 protesters have already been killed since demonstrations began at the end of December.

90 million people have also been cut off from the internet since the protests began.

United States President Donald Trump is said to be considering his options regarding the protests in Iran. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, diplomacy is still the first option for Trump. However, he is not ruling out the use of air strikes.

"One thing President Trump is very good at is always keeping all of his options on the table," Leavitt said. "And air strikes would be one of the many, many options that are on the table."

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the government of Iran have since warned other nations from interfering in the country's internal affairs.
