Indonesia Recalls Infant Formula Over Contamination Concerns

Per the report of Jakarta Globe, infant formula produced by Nestlé Suisse SA at its Konolfingen plant in Switzerland has been able to enter Indonesia. The plant is where the contamination is suspected to have happened.

The government, however, clarifies that cereulide was not found in the samples tested in the country.

"Laboratory results showed no detectable cereulide toxin in the tested samples,” the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) clarified. “However, the recall was ordered as a precautionary measure to prioritize public health protection.”

Prior to the issued recall, the likes of European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) and the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) issued food safety alerts regarding the suspected cereulide contamination.

Cereulide can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. Other symptoms include dehydration, abdominal pain, and lethargy.

BPOM Orders Suspension of Distribution, Import

As a response to the concerns over cereulide contamination, BPOM has also ordered PT Nestle Indonesia to halt the distribution and import of select infant formula products, according to a report by ANTARA News.

This follows a notification from the European Union Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (EURASFF).

The agency also encourages members of the public in possession of the affected product to return it to the place of purchase, or request for a return or exchange by contacting PT Nestle Indonesia.
